A partnership with icon artist Ioana Belcea, Motivo Mosaic crafted a 200-sq ft altar wall in glass, stone, and gold mosaic, transforming the Church of the Assumption from a stark, minimalist chapel to an immersive space of religious celebration, where the walls of the main altar not only provide a space for prayer, but inspire it. The Virgin Mary, rendered some 12 feet tall in expressive detail, invites petitions from within a mandorla of gold and blue. Mosaics surrounding the statues of the saints and the arch of the altar fade from the blue of sea and sky to the gold and stars of the heavens, echoing the narrative of the assumption.
